May 15: Espana - Mallorca Siesta

Palma de Mallorca, or Ciutat de Mallorca, or even al-Madiana Mayurqa, is the capital city of Mallorca and always has been. Palma unwinds with deliberate care around the natural bay of Bahia de Palma, facing due South. The Mar Mediterrania washes its soothing blue along the only horizon this city has. In fact, such is the absolute beauty of Palma that perhaps it only needs the one vista to gaze out at and daydream - there is plenty more to caress the imagination inside the city walls.

There is an amazing sense of deep peace alive within the streets, which are constantly in shade despite the searing sunshine which passes overhead. Buildings rise up like jungle canopy to blot out sunlight, leaving behind a coolness on every stone you touch. Ancient streets lean close to each other, whispering thoughts and gossip through open shutters. Along pathways, that twirl and lead through narrow labyrinths in endless circles, spirals of smooth stone steps have been polished to marble by centuries of passing feet. It is easy to lose oneself here, either by way of careless map reading, or through a romantic leaning to daydreaming.
